The museum focuses on educating visitors on Gulf Coast life before the arrival of man, the role of Native Americans, the arrival of Europeans to the region, Hispanic legacy, the affects of the Civil War, economic and how the Gulf Coast has become assimilated on a national and international level. The museum has five permanent exhibits and hosts one temporary exhibit that rotates several times a year. Port Arthur is also home to the Texas Artists Museum. The museum showcases artwork from nearly every town and city within a 20 or 30-mile radius of Port Arthur. Each month, a new artist displays their work in the main gallery. Every second Sunday a month, an event is held and features a variety of local entertainment.
