Offbeat Houston Attractions

Houston, like many other cities in Texas, is as traditional as it is “weird.” A visit to the city would not be complete without experiencing some of its more unusual aspects. Hop on board the red line metro rail, known by locals as “the slug”, as it takes you straight through the heart of downtown Houston.

While in Houston, take a moment to visit 2500 Summer Street. Sculpture artist David Adickes showcases 20 of his President Heads sculptures there. The sculptures are anywhere from 16 to 20 feet tall and showcase very realistic features of some of the most influential founding fathers. The massive heads are lined up in the field next to the parking lot of his studio. The lot is always open and is always free. When asked by a Washington Post reporter why he sculpted his gigantic Presidents, Adickes replied, “I just like big. I’m a Texan. Big is impressive. The Statue of Liberty, for example, as a piece of sculpture, is not that great, but standing in the harbor 151 feet tall, it’s great.” Once you get the chance to see the presidents for yourself, you’ll have to agree.

Another must-see destination is John Milkovisch’s beer can house. Milkovisch first began his project in 1968 when he began inlaying marbles, rocks, and metal pieces into concrete and redwood. His reasoning for starting the project? Hatred for lawn mowing. Milkvisch eventually turned to the house itself and began adding aluminum siding made from beer cans and over the next 18 years, the house disappeared under a cover of flattened beer cans. Garlands made of cut beer cans hanging from the roof edges not only made the house sing in the wind, but also lowered the family’s energy bills. It is estimated that over 50,000 cans adorn this monument. Watching it glisten under the Texas sun is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Food truck culture is big in Texas and Houston is no exception. Make a stop at the Waffle Bus and get acclimated to the food truck culture way of life. You can start with the classic: buttermilk fried chicken and waffle or be daring and try their smoked salmon waffle. Perhaps your sweet tooth has a hankering? The Nutella and banana waffle sandwich is just the thing.

No matter how you plan to spend your time in the city when you’re staying in our Houston corporate housing, whether it be in a quirky way or in a very traditional Texan way, one thing’s for sure: a visually stimulated mind and a happy tummy are two things you can look forward.
