Winter Activities in Lake Charles

1. History and Culture

There is no better time than the holidays to see Lake Charles’ chief attraction, the Charpentier Historic District. Well-off Lake Charles residents constructed these charming Victorian homes over the course of the 19th century. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, you’ll see them decked out in all the traditional trimmings. You don’t need to plan your visit to Charpentier; just put aside an afternoon and wander through the streets, enjoying some antique Christmas cheer.

While you’re in the historic district, stop by the Central School Arts and Humanities Center. This center includes the Children’s Theatre, a Black History Museum, the Mardis Gras Museum, and the Art Associate’s Gallery. You can also see art exhibits at the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center.

2. Natural Attractions

It might be too cold to swim, but you should still take a walk on the white sand beach that is within Lake Charles’ city limits. People sometimes underestimate the appeal of a beach during wintertime–without sunbathers and swimmers, you’ll have the waves and the sand all to yourself.

Right outside of our Lake Charles corporate housing, you can drive down the Creole Nature Trail, a paved road that will take you past some of Lake Charles’ most interesting natural attractions. Take a tour of the wetlands, and allow enough time to take pictures at every scenic vista.

3. Music and Dance

Lake Charles is known for its exciting nightlife, especially in its popular casinos. Check out the music schedules at the Isle of Capri Casino, or L’auberge Casino. They have regular music performances and the perfect atmosphere for taking a break from your regular schedule.

You’ll also find plenty of traditional holiday entertainment – the SFAA Performing Arts Theater at McNeese University will have daily performance of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet from December 11 – 14.

4. Christmas in Lake Charles

From November 20 – 22, visit the Misteletoe and Moss Holiday Market to browse a distinctive selection of gifts from a huge variety of boutique vendors. This is an extremely popular event, so make sure to buy tickets in advance.
